17, THE SPERIS LEGACY

Team 17

With apparent Amiga abandonment no longer a threat as we await the sequel to Alien Breed 3D, Team 17 enjoyed a strong 1995. The Speris Legacy (originally promised for the middle of last year, then completed, then not released, and even now only just on the verge of hitting the shops), is a Nintendo tribute which Zelda himself might fail to distinguish from himself if he looked into a mirror. But that’s okay, because with its lush graphics and massive long-term appeal, this is definitely one to. remember.

16. SUPER STREET FIGHTER II US Gold

US Gold made a brief reappearance on the Amiga last year with what, on the face of it, was a disaster looking for a place to happen. The original conversion of the hit coin-op left most people cold, and it was always going to be a struggle to win over the masses with a game which offered even more at the arcade. Surprisingly though, it was a success. The moves and new characters remain intact, and the whole affair has an excellent solid feel, despite a process of laborious disk Swaps.

15. SENSIBLE GOLF

Claims from lesser Amiga magazines that this game marked a demise in the standard of Sensible Software products are scorned here at Amiga Action. For three straight days the office came to a standstill as we trawled through bunkers and over trees in search of that elusive birdie. Tiny graphics in the Sensible style, and slightly inflexible gameplay — which is overlooked when the

game as a whole is played and enjoyed — didn’t detract from the golfing fun.

14. TURBO TRAX

Another effort for which the transition from finished product to available-to-buy game was a long one. Turbo Trax set the pace for overhead racers early in the year, and was programmed by Arcane Software, who later did something else which we now can’t remember. Its challenging tracks and slick, bright graphics are... well, challenging and slick. And bright. Good traction, great control, excellent game.

13. MAN UTD: THE DOUBLE Krisalis

The boys from Rotherham will want to be jumping on the Toon Army bandwagon if they’re to continue their endorsement of the Premiership Champions, but in “95, United’s glory was still fresh in the mind and Krisalis brought out the second of its ‘new breed’ of MUFC games. Using the Same game engine as Premier League Champions, the viewpoint was slewed into isometry and an editor included. It plays as well as its predecessor, looks even better, and was the only football game of note in the barren year that was ‘95.

12. LEADING LAP

The first game from Kellion Software =a multimedia outfit with an impressive list Of credits — Leading Lap took us back to basics in the world of computer racing and brought back our great mate the polygon.

Slick on a standard A1200 and greased lightning on anything more, the impressive tracks and controllable cars make for a top behind-the-driver experience, and there is the added bonus of a cable-linked duel mode for drivers who like to inflict pain. Unfortunately, with things as they are in Amigaland, it deserves to sell more than it probably will.

11. ODYSSEY

Audiogenic

A year in the life of the Amiga just wouldn't be the same without a sterling effort from the stalwarts at Audiogenic. Bubble ‘n’ Squeak missed out in last year’s list due to the sheer amount of good games on offer, but this time there’s been no holding back! Odyssey is like Flashback in that it’s a thinking man’s platform game and requires a touch more skill than your average left to right bash. It looks good, it plays well and its challenging.

10. SUPER TENNIS CHAMPS Audiogenic

In a Spartan sporting year on the Amiga, Super Tennis Champs is a breath of fresh air that you will almost certainly never grow tired of — and never mind that it shamelessly borrows almost every element from Super Tennis on the SNES. [Whereas it should alter the rules of the game, presumably...?]. Complete with a season mode in which you can take part in the four grandslam tournaments, it will even appeal to the loners amongst you because the one-player option is — unusually — first rate.

A game from the famous Graftgold stable rarely brings anything but a smile, and Virocop is no exception. Part platform game, part shoot’em-up, and 100% action all the way, it’s the kind of effort which goes down a treat on any format — and we had it first! Massive levels and loads to do make it a bitch to finish, but those who bought it didn’t much care, “Cos it great. Platformer of the year, and would have been even if there had been more than the two decent efforts we had, probably. Although it’s difficult to say, obviously...

8. FLIGHT OF THE AMAZON QUEEN

As the big boys bow out on the Amiga and the minnows attempt to fill their shoes) perhaps the saddest thing is that we'll never See the likes of high cost games such as Monkey Island again. Flight of the Amazon Queen then, should be purchased, and as fable dictates, have the most made out of it. Excellent puzzles on a graphical set the likes of which we rarely see any more, backed up by dialogue which, whilst not exactly Tarantino-esque, is at least bearable, make this a must for adventurers. Hope you've got a hard drive...

Some were good and some were woeful, but it was virtually impossible to separate the three in this here list. So we haven’t done. Or at least, we kind of have, and after much bickering amongst ourselves an order has been established, though the pouts remain on certain lips. Well no, that’s not true, but anyway...

Gloom was first on the scene, and impressive it was too with its speedy movement and dirty great monsters, as was the similar Fears which appeared just a few short weeks after. Alien Breed 3D made a dramatic late entrance and proved every bit their equal and a little bifmore, quashing rumours once and for all that the Amiga can’t cope with this type of game.

4. COLONIZATION

MicroProse

Sid Meier was welcomed back by the Strategists in 1995 and provided us all with a brand new treat in the shape of his true follow up to Civilization. An immense and involving struggle to Colonize (sic) and improve the New World, it’s a game which can’t be fully appreciated in just a few hour’s play — it'll keep you occupied for hours once you’re drawn in. Plenty of brainpower is needed, but it’s more than worth the effort. A future classic, this one.

3. SUPER SKIDMARKS

Perhaps a poignant reminder of the depth of

quality in previous years is that the updated

version of 1993’s number 13 in the Amiga

Action Top 20 is surpassed by only one effort this time. This doesn’t take

anything away from Acid’s home-made racer though, because as far as no-holds- barred genuine game excitement goes, Super Skidmarks is among the very best ever. A greater choice and an increased number of cars on new-but-similar slidy tracks (plus the inclusion of caravans and even motorised moo cows!) is about the strength of what's on offer, but once you've played it you know it’s enough.

Nothing even comes close to being classed as runner up to this year’s soon-to-be- classic number one game, so we simply haven’t bothered with one.

1.WORMS

The truth of the matter is that by the time Worms finally arrived, most of us here at Amiga Action had long since become fed up of having it rammed down our throats week in, week Out. We all firmly believed that Team 17 had wildly overhyped its game. How wrong we were. It lived up to its press 100% and quickly brought the entire office to a wild gaming frenzy not seen since the arrival of Sensible Soccer over three years ago. Basically, you have a number of worms and need to kill those of your opponent(s) whilst protecting your own. All manner of firepower is at your disposal, and worm-death can arrive in the most unsuspected manner. The graphics are cute yet largely unspectacular, but the sound is tremendous and the gameplay is the stuff of dreams. A worthy winner and a must buy for all Amiga owners.

Sure, the graphics were probably best described as functional rather than spectacular, but Zeewolf and games of its kind are all about playability, and as it was flexible, easy to play and wholly enjoyable, it more than met the criteria.

And so now we have Zeewolf 2: Wild Justice — the sequel, and the game which Binary hopes will take its name to the forefront as exponents of quality games. The biggest and most noticeable difference is the speed. The landscape whizzes by at a phenomenal rate on the A1200, and in this respect even outshines the monster Desert Strike which, in all honesty, probably still ranks as the top Amiga game of this kind.

The landscapes are pretty much the same as before, only now there is a wider choice (four in all), with the barren arctic and a frozen toxic waste thrown in for added good measure. The detail level has been bumped up too — another factor which makes the new improved game speed all the more impressive. Obviously this greater speed means that controlling your chopper is slightly more difficult to get the hang of, but once you're firmly in the driving seat it becomes second nature. Once again you oversee the action via the joystick, and if you're feeling really clever, the optional mouse control provides even greater flexibility for the price of a few more hours spent practising.

Greater speed and smoother scrolling make destruction of the enemy (or whatever other covert operations you're instructed to Carry out) much easier. But wait! It isn’t easier at all, and this is because the missions are on the whole a touch more difficult than in Zeewolf, though non- experts should have no difficulty whatsoever in picking Wild Justice up cold and getting straight into it.

Having mentioned just a few short paragraphs ago that the biggest and most noticeable difference is the speed, | would now like to refute that claim, and state instead that the REAL biggest difference is the opportunity to control other vehicles in the game. A large and cumbersome transport helicopter, a small and nifty plane, a large and cumbersome tank, and a small and nifty boat can all be hopped into and driven about. They're only accessible at certain points however, and it is actually possible to make your way through the game without resorting to using them. But they're great fun while they last and add a new dimension to the game. Or half a dimension at least.

Now Wild Justice is a game of thrill and action — there’s no doubt about that. But — moreso even than in its predecessor — there is a need here for thought, strategy, and at times even a little patience.

As the missions progress, importance is switched from random helicopter violence to eagle-eyed landscape scouring and deadly accuracy. The amount of weaponry WelUmarhuemal an Zelelmelt seer mm ialiirl compared to the amount of difficult targets which need wiping out. It’s a challenge,

undoubtedly, but it transpires that the slight frustration which we thought had disappeared from Zeewolf has in fact only been shifted to a different area of the game.

This is the biggest complaint, but it isn’t even that much of a problem. In fact, minor, not-worth-mentioning niggles aside, this is the only complaint | have about the whole game. Does this mean that Zeewolf 2: Wild Justice is good? Undoubtedly so. Does it means that the game is excellent? Well, you can probably work that bit out for yourselves.

Now then, where shall we land, hmm...?

You begin the contest with three lives to use to the best of your ability. There are passwords available for a restart and these are determined by how much energy, shields etc you have remaining at the time. If you lose a life midway through any stage you will restart at the beginning of the same level, although any enemies killed will remain in their decomposing state.

The pixel resolution can be changed to either a clear state for graphical realism, or an incredibly pixelly affair to once again assist in the smooth running of the game.

The similarities between this and the other similar releases already mentioned (excepting Gloom) is that it is played on several different floors instead of one flat

_ ground level. This works quite well as floors _ collapse and hidden areas are discovered.

Sound effects are as you would expect, with explosions and gunshots being the norm. These are optional, as is the music for the entire game. Breathless is at its best

Does anyone else feel, as | do, that we Amiga enthusiasts have been badly let down by Escom? It brought the

machine back from the dead after the Commodore fiasco, sure, but now seems to have left the Al 200 in limbo — and at Christmas of all times!

While rival companies flaunt their latest computer stuff with massive newspaper and television advertising campaigns, Escom keeps the Amiga on the starting blocks and, it must be said, may already be fed up with the machine which it recently was so pleased to announce that it had “saved” from the dreaded computer graveyard in the sky.

If the situation doesn’t improve | am seriously considering trading my Al 200 for another machine (perhaps a PC) before it finally does die - something which won't take long if Escom continues marketing it as it has.

THE AQUATIC GAMES

This game stars James Pond at the centre, but it’s different from the usual James Pond games because it isn’t a platformer, but a comedy sports game in which you take part in a lot of different events such as Sponge Jumping and The Water Sprint. It’s better than a normal sports game because the events are more fun to take part in. You are awarded points for each event and get the chance to go away with a medal if you win the whole thing. James Pond is the character you control, by the way.

Summary: Good fun, and better than just an average platformer. 85%

BENEATH A STEEL oKY

There are good sides and bad sides to Beneath a Steel Sky. Firstly, if you only

have £15 to spend and want an excellent game then you're quids in, because this is as good as adventures get on the Amiga. Secondly though, if you don't have a hard drive, or at the very least an external drive, then you'll be pulling your hair out because it is literally Disk Swap City. The graphics are brilliant and the text is almost always either amusing or informative, and the minimum of waffle means that Steel Sky moves along at a cracking pace and keeps you engrossed until — if you reach it — the end.

Summary: A lot of disks, but a lot of game too. 90%

Viewed from the side of the table, Arcade Pool allows various kinds of play, from the usual UK to weird US rules, and you can even choose an authentic sounding pub soundtrack if you like. The only problem is lining up your shot. The angle takes some getting used to, and even then it’s a case of slight guess work. But what the hell! lf you’re fed up of bikers chucking you off the pool table at your local pub, you could do a lot worse than this. And you don’t have to pay for a drink either.

If those thousands of you sitting at home, dribbling and convulsing at yet another Championship Manager-less month can lay aside the pill bottles, cut-throat razors and those funny leather things that hold snooker balls which you put in your mouth that perverts wear, for just a while longer, you'll find that appeasement is, at long last, on its way. Championship Manager 2 should - and this is official - “Be out by the end of February”.

As Domark’s Paul Fox explained to our intrepid Scoop Hound, the Amiga version of what is already a smash hit on the PC has taken what some consider to be a surprisingly long time to convert, because of the level of detail the programmers are committed to including. Of course Clive Tyldesley’s voiced commentary will have to be sacrificed, and

production costs decree that Domark can’t run to the hundred-odd disks necessary to hold pictures of every single league ground, so it'll be selected ones only. These were just the icing on the PC cake though, so it’s no great loss, and it’s good news to hear that every element of the incredibly detailed matches will be left largely untampered with.

Unfortunately, because of the ridiculous hours the programmers are keeping, Amiga screenshots aren’t due to arrive until after this mag leaves for the printers, so you'll have to make do with these obvious ‘not Amiga screenshots’. And remember, if you see similar ones in the review, then you'll know we've reviewed the PC version ‘again’ — because oooo0ooooh! we're forever doing that.
